Church on Earth: Grounding Your Ministry in a Sense of Place
By Peter Bakken and Jeff Wild
What difference does environment make in a congregation's life and
mission? A world of difference if understood and embraced, according
to the authors of Church on Earth: Grounding Your Ministry in a Sense
of Place. Focusing on the congregation as place and unique nexus
for cultivating spiritual, social, and ecological relationships ¬ has
implications for the shape of a congregation's particular identity
and vocation; for how it embodies and proclaims the Gospel in worship,
education, evangelism, and service. A sense of place offers new possibilities
for connecting Word and Sacrament more intimately and integrally
with the daily life of parishioners and for enriching the congregation's
outreach to the surrounding community and world. Concrete examples
for what this means in a particular congregation are provided from
the experience of Madison Christian Community, an innovative ecumenical
partnership of Advent Lutheran Church (ELCA) and Community of Hope
(UCC) in Madison, Wisconsin.

climate while, at the same time, triggering an unprecedented gain
in the overall equity and wealth of the global economy.

Union for Concerned Scientists/Ecological Society of America report
on "Confronting Climate Change in the Great Lakes Region:
Impacts on Our Communities and Ecosystems," a comprehensive
study by a team of leading scientists from Midwest universities
and Canada concludes that climate change in the Great Lakes region
caused by heat-trapping gases from human activities could lead
to a 5-12 degree Fahrenheit temperature increase in winter and
5-20 degree warming in summer by the end of this century. These
changes could bring more floods and droughts, lower lake levels
and less lake ice cover, increased burdens on farmers, and growing
conflicts over water use. The scientists say climate change will
likely also magnify existing health and environmental problems
in the region. However, the report concludes that actions can
be taken now to forestall many of the most severe impacts.
